WALLS

EPS Walls FAQs

Is EPS a popular choice for External Wall Insulation Systems?

Yes. Expanded polystyrene is still, by far, the most popular insulation type used by the UK’s major EWI system designers. It is a low cost, effective solution for adding thermal efficiency to dwellings up to two storeys in height.

Are External Wall Insulation Systems accredited?

There are a number of External Wall Insulation System designers in the UK that hold valid BBA certification of a system incorporating expanded polystyrene. For further information, visit the BBA Certification website at https://www.bbacerts.co.uk .

What thickness of expanded polystyrene will I need for my EWI project?

The thickness of EPS required will be dependent on a number of factors, including the current thermal efficiency of the building and the target U-value you wish to achieve. Please contact our technical support team on  0191 250 0818 for further information.

Why should I use expanded polystyrene as opposed to other insulants?

S and B’s Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is a cost-effective, highly versatile material. Manufactured in the UK, it is often readily available for next day delivery, saving valuable downtime on site. Expanded polystyrene is lightweight and easy to manoeuvre; it is also easy to cut and install as part of an external wall insulation system. U-values as low as 0.030 W/mK can be achieved using EPS, satisfying current building regulations.

What is the difference between white and grey EPS?

Our grey EPS boards (Lambdatherm®) are graphite enhanced and as such offer a more superior thermally efficiency; reaching thermal values as low as 0.030 W/mK.

Are EPS insulation boards heavy?

Expanded polystyrene is lightweight and easy to manoeuvre on site. It is also extremely easy to cut and install as part of an external wall insulation system.

What is Lambdatherm®?

Lambdatherm® is a trade name of S and B EPS for our range of low lambda value thermal products. These products are easily identified by their grey colour.

What can I do with my polystyrene waste?

EPS is one of the few materials that can truly claim to be 100% recyclable. It can be reused in the manufacture of new EPS products, soil improvements, auxiliary compost material and added to other building materials. By fusion and granulation, it can also be turned into simple products such as coat hangers and pens. Here at S and B EPS, we can arrange a waste collection scheme where excess clean waste is removed from site and taken back to our plant and recycled.

Can expanded polystyrene be used in adverse weather conditions?

Yes. The closed-cell structure of expanded polystyrene inhibits water absorption and is unaffected by the normal range of climatic conditions.

Does Lambdatherm® cause skin irritation?

EPS is non-toxic and non-irritant therefore no specific precautions are necessary with respect to product handling.

I only have a small project - do you have local stockists?

For full pallet loads, we use haulage services such as Pallet Network and Pallex, who offer a nationwide delivery service. For smaller quantities of external wall insulation grade boards, we may be able to point you in the direction of a specialist EWI system designer in your area. Please contact our technical support team on  0191 250 0818 for further information.

I want to insulate my home using the Green Homes Grant scheme. What should I do?

The Green Homes Grant is due to run from September 2020 until March 2021 and External Wall Insulation is classed as a primary measure, meaning that the benefits of having an EWI system installed far outweigh some of the secondary measures. For further information, please refer to notifications on the Government’s website: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-for-the-green-homes-grant-scheme

What is the best way to cut EPS on site?

EPS can be easily scored with a tape measure and cut using a fine-toothed saw.

What can I do with my waste EPS?

A waste collection scheme can be run where excess clean waste is taken back to our plant and recycled back into EPS.

What is Lambdatherm® ?

Lambdatherm® is a trade name of S and B Eps for our range of Low lambda thermal products, these products are easily identified with their grey colour.

Can S and B external wall insulation boards be stored outside?

Yes. The closed-cell structure of expanded polystyrene inhibits water absorption rendering them unaffected by the normal range of climatic conditions.
